Birthdays can be super tricky when it comes to HAPPINESS. Some of them have made me want to celebrate like crazy, and some have made me want to run. Mine was at the beginning of this month. Unfortunately, it was accompanied by a major 2-3 week anxiety attack and depression flare up.
I have found that for the first 3 years of my 40s, I’ve been consumed with comparing myself to what I thought I’d be like at this age/stage. So essentially, stressing out for about 1,000 days because of an “imaginary” me. CRAZINESS!
As I celebrated a friend’s 40th birthday this past weekend (she was the lucky recipient of my very first crochet birthday cake!), she told me that she felt much more confident entering her 40s, and that she had a very hard time turning 30.
But now, she looked around, liked who she’s turning into, and feels great! I couldn’t be happier for her, and it caused me to reflect a lot on why my 40s have been tough for me to take so far.
I realized that I need to practice letting go of that “me that was supposed to be”, and get back to being happy with the me that is!
Crochet Birthday Cake
I made the double layer cake, using a battery operated tealight in the top, which left just enough room in the bottom to tuck a special message on a tiny scroll. There would be adequate space for a little charm, a pair of earrings, or something else of that size, too.
For my teeny tiny scroll, I used a piece of ribbon and wrote on it with a fine-tip Sharpie.
The box can be kept as a little treasure, or reused to pass a little happiness along to the next birthday girl 🙂
To make this, I used:
- CAKE: Lily Sugar n Cream Cotton in Yellow
- ICING: Lily Sugar n Cream Cotton in Hot Pink
- LEAVES: Lily Sugar n Cream in Hot Green
- BUNTING: Lily Sugar n Cream Cotton in White
- A size B 2.25mm hook for all, except a size F 4.0mm hook for the bunting
- Battery Operated Tealight

Let’s keep spreading that happiness around this world like crazy!
